The oil and gas industry is a major economic contributor in Canada. As such, many jobs in Alberta, an area rich in these resources, are available to those who are keen on working in this industry, or for those who are equipped with the skills needed by the companies involved. Although finding these jobs has become easier with the advent of the Internet, this is just the first step.

After a compilation, or self-assessment of one’s skill set, it is important to match them with the right job. Research what the job entails within the company and the stage of oil or gas production process it is applicable to supporting. Most times prospective employers ask the applicant what he or she thinks the job would be about. The hypothetical job description the applicant presents should be tailored to match what the company actually needs the position to accomplish. This will increase the chances of getting the job. It will also help with choosing the job at the company that actually matches a person’s temperament and skill set.

Within the industry, there are three main stages that mark a company’s stage of development. These are as follows: the exploration stage; the construction and extraction stage; and the refining stage. Knowing for which of these stages the job is for will help in crafting the best application and resume. For example if the company is at the exploration stage, the need for geology and geology support skills is going to be most critical. Crafting the resume to emphasize these skills will help the applicant stand out in the hiring process.

The positions for the exploration stage are typically geologists, seismic workers, road and site preparation specialists, truck drivers, swamper drivers, land agents. In the construction and extraction stage, oil and gas companies seek construction laborers, heavy equipment operators, pipeline maintenance personnel, gas plant and gas utility operators, pipe fitters, and other such jobs important when linking the source to a refinery. Positions for the third stage, the refinery stage, generally include computer analysts and programmers, buyers, logistics managers, laboratory technicians, instrument technicians, operating technicians. These are just examples as it is somewhat different from company to company.

The educational requirement varies, depending on the position available. However, most positions require at least vocational skills training and specialist knowledge. The pay rate will depend on the position, education, and experience requirements. Because oil and gas is a lucrative business, those who get accepted can expect higher compensation of at least twenty percent, compared to comparable positions at companies outside of the industry. Medical and other benefits are also above the norm.

There are many major companies in the oil and gas industry in Alberta. Although it is readily apparent why these companies are in this lucrative business, they have differing philosophies, when it comes to how the work should be done. Knowledge of this will help applicants present their resume in the best light. Best of all though, knowing that the company being applied to believes in the same work principles may lead to a satisfying and lasting position with them.
